The roots of the Civil Services in India go back to the British era. Initially, candidates were nominated by the East India Company and trained in London. After Lord Macaulay’s reforms in 1854, competitive examinations were introduced. The first Indian to succeed was Satyendranath Tagore in 1864. Over time, the exam evolved and began to be conducted in India from 1922 onwards, eventually becoming the UPSC Civil Services Examination we know today.
